Seeing a Geisha in Japan

When one day I travel to Japan, I would like to see a Geisha.

A Geisha in Japan is known for their entertainment and hosting of tea ceremonies.

I think they are beautifully dressed with wearing kimono’s and sandals with white socks. As well as their make-up beautifully displayed and stunning hair-styles that they showcase.

I love the elegance and artistic traits of a Geisha. From their cute and beautiful traditional Japanese umbrella’s to their traditional style dances.

It takes training to be a Geisha and this occurs in their teenage years. I guess that’s one aspect I am drawn too, they commit to training and being the elegant form of a Geisha. Maiko is a Geisha in training and they live in Geisha houses for five years. Talk about immersing themselves in the complete tradition and transformation to become a Geisha.

I also appreciate that they study etiquette. It’s similar to princesses and princes-to be, studying etiquette to be seen and act as a Royal. You need patience and calmness to be able to tackle this effectively and not be bored by the continual practice of etiquette. I feel like if you can pull this off then you are half the way there to being a Geisha.

Did you want to see a Geisha when travelling to Japan?

I would love to see the elegance and beautification of a Geisha. The best time you will see them is at dusk on weekends and during holidays. Apparently you can see them in Gion and Pontocho in Japan. This makes sense as both Gion and Pontocho hosts the traditional Japanese style housing, which I love and will definitely want to see while travelling in Japan. As well as the traditional lighting in the streets, especially around shops.

I think if I was close to a Geisha, I would be in total awe and a fan. You can speak to Geisha’s with consent.

There are places in Japan, you can also dress as a Geisha for a day. I think that would be pretty cool. In places such as Kyoto and Tokyo. You can wear the traditional kimono, wigs and have your make-up done. You may even be able to pay for a professional photo. I would definitely do this activity when visiting Japan.

The possible downfalls of being a Geisha, you are not allowed to marry or have a boyfriend. They also only get one day off a week.

Some rules for those seeing a Geisha. Do not touch their Kimono or hair wig.

Interestingly, the making of a Geisha starts in the teenage years (as mentioned earlier). And they generally retire in their thirty’s or fourties.

The most famous Japanese Geisha was Mineko and she retired at 29 years old. Mineko is now 75 years young. She is now a Japanese businesswoman and author.

Add seeing or dressing up as a Geisha to your travels to Japan.
